Do you work for more than 40 hours a week?

Image
If you are among those who work for more than 40 hours a week, then it's essential to alter your working schedule as it might cause physical and mental illness. This new study calls for a revision in the 48-hour-week limit set internationally about 80 years ago. The new research from The Australian National University (ANU) shows the work limit should be set at 39 hours a week for a healthy life. "Long work hours erode a person's mental and physical health, because it leaves less time to eat well and look after themselves properly," said Huong Dinh from the ANU Research School of Population Health. For women, Dinh said healthy work limit was 34 hours per week once their other commitments were considered. The healthy work limit for men was up to 47 hours a week generally because they spend much less time on care or domestic work than women. "Despite the fact that women on average are as skilled as men, women on average have lower paid jobs and less autonomy than m...

Old habits die hard: Don’t be the boss – at least, don’t appear to be’ – I once read. It’s important that business leaders endeavour to treat all staff equally, irrespective of their age, and as the old saying goes, treat those as you would wish to be treated – in the workplace this extends to not asking anyone to do anything you aren’t prepared to do yourself. This is particularly true as the owner of a start-up. There are mundane tasks during the early days but this gives young leaders the chance to get stuck in with everyone – don’t immediately delegate. Old habits die hard, so g...

Many of you are familiar with bone-healthy foods that reduce cortisol and decrease the symptoms of stress and anxiety. But did you know that some eating habits and foods do exactly the opposite? While missing one now and then isn’t bad, if meal-skipping becomes a habit, it habitually destabilizes your blood sugar and sets the stage for moodiness, irritability, and anxiety. Missing a meal also means you’re missing an opportunity to balance your pH and strengthen your bones with nutritious foods. 2.Fried And/Or Processed Foods Highly-processed, packaged foods are low in nutritive value and high in sodium, sugar, and more often than not, synthetic chemicals and food additives. Tips on How to ensure your liver function properly

Image
The liver is a large, meaty organ that sits on the right side of the belly. Weighing about 3 pounds, the liver is reddish-brown in color and feels rubbery to the touch. Normally you can't feel the liver, because it's protected by the rib cage. The liver has two large sections, called the right and the left lobes. The gallbladder sits under the liver, along with parts of the pancreas and intestines. The liver and these organs work together to digest, absorb, and process food. The liver's main job is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body. The liver also detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs. As it does so, the liver secretes bile that ends up back in the intestines. The liver also makes proteins important for blood clotting and other functions. Things you can avoid to ensure your liver will function properly 1.Incorporate proper foods and eating habits To safely begin detoxifying the liver, you don't want to ru...

How eating Junk food can damage your kidneys as diabetes

Image
Eating a junk food diet can be as damaging to the kidney as diabetes, according to a new study. The new research shows that the problems caused by eating fast food or a diet high in fat are similar to those found in type 2 diabetes. The study took rats and fed them a diet of either junk food – consisting of cheese, chocolate bars and marshmallows - for eight weeks or a special food that was high in fat for five weeks. The researchers then looked at the changes those diets made to the animals’ blood sugar levels and the glucose transports that are in the kidneys. Those transporters have a central role in diabetes and problems with them can lead to significant problems for internal organs. The study found that the rats with type 2 diabetes had more of certain kinds of glucose transporters and regulatory proteins. But the diet caused similar changes in those same receptors – meaning that it could lead to the same problems as experienced by people with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes occurs when...

One Tip on how to keep your kidneys healthy always

Image
Eating red meat may boost the risk for kidney failure, but swapping even one daily serving of red meat for another protein may reduce the risk, a large study from Singapore suggested. Red meat intake is strongly associated with an increased risk of end-stage renal disease, the loss of normal kidney function. The relationship was also "dose dependent", which means the higher the consumption, the greater the risk. The association held up even after compensating for factors that could skew the results, such as lifestyle and other health conditions, the study authors noted. "Our findings suggest that patients with chronic kidney disease or the general population worried about their kidney health can still maintain protein intake but consider switching to plant-based sources," said Dr Woon-Puay Koh, professor in the office of Clinical Sciences at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School in Singapore. "However, if they still choose to eat meat, fish, shellfish and poultry ar...
